Here is the answer key to both forms of Quiz II.   Exam II will be ~1/3 multiple choice (MC)  in points ~ 12 questions, ~1/3 short answer (SA) in points and ~1/3  long answer (LA) in points.   There will be 2 LA questions each worth about 15 points.   One of the LA questions will be stoichiometry (could include molarity or molar volumes).    One of the LA questions will be gas or could be molarity or molar volumes.

To study for the exam, please make sure that you understand and can do the questions on Quiz II.   Please also make sure that you can do all of the questions from your homework in class.    Do not simply memorize the question on quiz II because the exact same question will NOT be on the exam.   If I ask the same question but about a differnt reaction or ask for moles instead of grams, etc, it will do you no good to just memorize the answer.   If you understand all the questions on the quiz, I almost guarantee at least an 80% on the exam.   Good luck studying for the exam.

Also I noticed when I tried to grade your lab reports that almost all of you ignored my suggestion that if you are unable to get the density of air from the free air density calculating website that you just use my given number.   If you looked at the lab report form itself, the equation for molecular mass was given on the chart itself (answer to the first question - give the equation).   For the second question all you had to do is plug in the numbers from your data into the equation.    Did you not notice the little comments on the chart about how you complete the chart ?   I thought to myself as I made up the lab report form - boy I am making up too easy a lab report form.   When no one came to ask me how to complete the lab report form I thought to myself - boy these students are too smart for my stupid lab report form.

Also why does everyone sign and initial on the sign out sheet  on thursdays?   You are only supposed to sign out on Thursday.  If you have not finished the experiment, then you are supposed to come back on Tuesday to finish the experiment.   On Tuesday you can also come to ask me questions about how to complete the lab report form.   On Tuesday you are supposed to initial out.   So no I am not just trying to see how much writing you can do in a short amount of time as you leave the lab.   I am choosing the shortest labs that I can possibly come up with but there is not a lot that you can do in an hour and a half of lab time.   There are almost no reactions that can be completed in an hour and a half and reactions cannnot mostly be split into 2 half parts of 1.5 hours each.

Exam II will be ~1/3 in points multiple choice (~12 questions), ~1/3 short answer in points, and ~1/3 long answer in points (2 questions).   The long answer question will probably be one of the 4 reaction mechanisms (SN2, SN1, E2, E1).   One of the questions will probably be some variation on the steroechemistry chapter (enantioner, diasteroemer).

notes-8-31-16WednesdayLecture  Here are lecture notes for 8/31/16.    Before 8/31/16, we did a brief review of Organic Chemistry because about half the class is taking Organic Chemistry this semester at the same time that you are taking the Biochemistry.  I did not want half the class to be at a disadvantage from the rest of the class.   To study for this few lectures material, you should look at the first few lectures (powerpoints) from Organic up until the description of functional groups.   You are also responsible for the document camera notes in class and the whiteboard notes which are not posted here.

I also still do not have the desk copy of this textbook & do not yet have access to the online material for instructors so I am working off of an earlier edition of the text which I borrowed from Dr. Peters.   (When I contacted the textbook representativem, I was totally ignored.   The person who handles the textbooks kept sending me to the wrong textbook reprsentative (Pearson instead of Cengage) so the request was posted around Thursday 9/1 which explains why I have received nothing yet from Cengage.  This was in part because I misunderstood the level of the class and requested the Stryer Biochemistry text (senior chemistry major/first year chemistry graduate student level text) in late July and only requested the Bettelheim text around the beginning of August.

Quiz I (on Monday 9/19/16, announced on Monday 9/12 after I floated the idea of when to give a quiz before labor day) will cover from chapter 1 to the end of chapter 4.   Our Quiz I will be given on Monday during class time.   It will be open book, open notebook and (because it is mostly an online text) will also be open internet.    The quiz should be between one to 3 pages long (if I give you plenty of room to write your answer).

Quiz I will cover everything from the beginning of the semester to now.   It will be short answers and maybe short paragraph answer kind of test.   Some of the questions may not have a right or wrong answer but will be graded correct if you answer in an insightful manner with a few sentences.   I will let you take the entire class period to complete the quiz.

Also here is the syllabus addendum which I have been talking about for about the last 2 weeks.   (Syllabus addendum is not uploading onto my website quickly so I will have to add that link later.)
