Fall 2021 semester (at the Citadel)
General Chemistry I Lab CHEM 161:

(My position at the Citadel is teaching only. I will not be doing any research at the Citadel.  Further down below website is just my old websites from my old positions and have nothing to do with the Citadel.  I am also not either an undergraduate or graduate  student at the Citadel.)

M  section 1:   3:00 to 4:50 pm  Byrd 207 (CRN 15594)   (18 students)

M section 3:   1:00 to 2:50 pm  Byrd 207 (CRN 15576) (17 students)

 W section 9:    3:00 to 4:50 pm  Byrd 207 (CRN 15582) (11 students)

W section 10:   1:00 to 2:50 pm Byrd 207  (CRN 15583) (17 students)

Final Grades:  I submitted final grades this morning.   I did exactly what I said I would do.   Excused absences were replaced by the equation    (Missing Lab report 1) / (your own average lab reports) = (class ave lab report 1) / (class ave all lab reports)   I did notice that in Canvas the "excused" grade and inputting the average made almost no difference in grades so in the future I would not bother doing this.   (I always takes a lot of time to do this because I have to do it manually and a lot of people were on quarantine/covid during the semester so there were a lot of "excused" grades.   I also dropped one lowest lab report grade and one lowest lab quiz grade as it states in my syllabus.

I also input 50% grades for anyone who attended lab as evidenced by signing into the class roster but turned in no lab reports.  In my syllabus you earn 50% of the lab grade by actually doing the lab.  Because of the extended late deadline, almost no one earned a zero for missing labs.   I don't know that I would ever do it again because it is pretty painful to grade late lab reports until the last minute.    I did not enjoy that at all.   A few of you earned a bunch of 50% grades because you still had not turned in lab reports by the end of the extended deadline.

The final average for the combined sections came out to 92.5%.   Almost no one had zeros which did not drop because of non attendance.    At midterm the average of all sections was 85% if I included zeros for non attendance or for not submitting a lab report.   At midterm the average with out the zeros had been 89%.

All grades are posted in Canvas.   I exported the Canvas grade so I have a copy of the Canvas grade which I have on my laptop.   If you see any errors, feel free to email me.   If I made an error (I did some 70 students grades with some 30 individual graded stuff per student - or 2,100 individual grades), let me know and I will correct the error.

Have a good holiday.

Here is the video of the actual Lab Class on Wednesday 11/17/21 at 3 pm section.

I just want to also point out that I am only on campus from around 11 am to a little after 5 pm on only Monday and Wednesday.   So I am sitting at  my office Byrd 318 from only around 11 am to 12:40 noon and after the end of the lab until I finish inputting your CAS attendance (which can only be input on the day of the lab and only by using an on campus computer).   The rest of the time I am in Columbia, SC.

If anyone turns in any late lab reports under the door of Byrd 318, I would count that as not having been turned in because I can almost guarantee that I would not get it.    Byrd 318 the outer office is where my desk is located.    Byrd 318 has an inner office and a lab.   2 dofferent other faculty are in the inner office and the lab.    Also because I am there only for all of maybe 4 hours a week (while waiting to teach and after getting out of teaching and on my way out), it would be very reasonable for anyone to use my desk, desktop and printer while I am not there.

So if you leave your lab report for me to get by sliding it under the door of the locked office door, there is no telling where it would end up.   I am never there with the door closed anyway.   Even if you leave the lab report on my desktop, it would be sitting on the desk for a really long time with other people (not myself) probably using my desk.   Any turned in report could very well disappear.   I found someone's lab report on top of my desk one time and no one seemed to know to whom it belonged.    Also if you want to see when I am there, I have a logsheet under the door label of Byrd 318.    I am only on campus when I am logged in and I am never on campus when I am not logged into the log sheet.

Because the faculty teaching the General Chemistry lab are taking turns making up prelab, I was assigned to do the prelab talk for the Molecular Polarity Lab (Experiment 10 - going on from 11/15 M to 11/18 R)    I posted my material into Canvas for the other Chemistry Lab instructors.   I am going to go ahead and post the material here (as well as into canvas) for my students.

Expt 8:  Hydrogen Models Lab:

Here is the recording of the lecture on 11/3/21 Wednesday in my 3 pm section.   It has a lot of useful information for answering the lab report form.   Especially the latter half has a lot of help in answering the lab textbook questions.

https://1drv.ms/v/s!AtMCcaDAH2NEjQo07usEtX5XBZ0b?e=yrDszu    I actually answered more of the lab textbook questions than I answered in my other sections because some students pointed out some of the multiple parts of the questions which I did not answer in earlier sections of the lab.    posted by Dr. Hahn on 11/4/21 at 9:30 am from her parent's Columbia, SC home

Because I am the Chemistry 161 Lab  Instructor who is in charge of doing the prelab for the Hydrogen Model Lab (including the prelab quiz and the lab report form), I had to make it up and give it to all of the other Chemistry 161 Lab Instructors.   Therefore, I am going to go ahead and post that lab prelab here.   Here is the video link to the prelab for the HydrogenModelsLab ( https://1drv.ms/v/s!AtMCcaDAH2NEjQfKeTkJCSl_7mlt?e=7xsZTm ) Here is the lab report form

All the faculty teaching the CHEM 161 lab are taking turns doing the prelab material.   The other instructors may or may not post what I videotaped.   They may or may not use my lab report form.    I have so far used all of the material provided by the other instructors in its entirely exactly as provided by the other instructors.

To my Monday students - I did not see it but the guy who sets up the labs complained that my students left a watery mess in the balance room after the October 18th 4:50 pm lab.    I always check the balance room and I did not see a watery mess after the end of the October 18th lab.    I did see some minor spillage on the paper towel.   I did not throw away the paper towels with the minor spillage because the guy who sets up the lab wrote - "close all bottles after use (something like that)" on the paper towels.  I did not want to get rid of needed directions on the papertowels.    I hope no one went into the lab after I checked the balance room and left a watery mess in the balance room.

Expt 7:  Handwarmer Lab:   coming soon (finally now posted on 10/28/21 Tuesday at 10:10 am )

Here is the video of the lab class on Part I of the Handwarmer Lab  https://1drv.ms/v/s!AtMCcaDAH2NEjQibTYMdAjML88a9 Here is the lab report form which I handed out for my Wednesday class.   Note that the lab report form (first page Part 2 - specific heat capacity of a huma hand)  (I am writing  all of my lab report forms this semester) that I handed out to my Monday class (on 10/18/21 because of Leadership Day ) did not have a blank for T(initial of ice water) because the lab textbook (I did not write the textbook) did not ask you to record the T (initial of ice water).   So the DT of the sausage should be = T(final of calorimeter) - T(ice water)    and  DT of the water should be = T(final calorimeter) - T(initial calorimeter).

There are 2 general types of calorimettry problems.   (type I) is where you add something cold (sausage)  or  hot to the calorimeter.   For this type of problem, you need to have the initial temperature of the cold or hot object that you add to the calorimter    (type II) is where you do a reaction inside the calorimeter.   For this type of calorimetry experiment, the temperature of the reaction (calcium chloride dissolving in water)  is the same as the temperature of the calorimeter because the reaction is occuring in the solution and you can't measure the reaction without the solution.   It is just that one loses heat (CaCl2 exothermic reaction)  and the other gains heat (the water in which the reaction is being done).

I got yelled at again by the guy who sets up the lab at 5 minutes before my 1 pm class and 5 minutes before my 3 pm class on 10/28/21 Wednesday.   It is only because I am a pretty sturdy person that I was not a blubbering crying mess as I taught my classes on Wednesday.   He said that there was Calcium Chloride on the balance pans and a watery mess in the balance room after my Monday 10/25 lab classes.   I had literally wiped down every balance pans with a dry paper towel at the end of my Monday 10/25 lab classes.  Because the guy who sets up the lab had complained about the "watery mess" after my 10/18 Monday lab.   I had not left a mess because I ALWAYS check my entire lab room at the end of my lab class.

My Monday class had NOT left a mess in the balance room anyway to begin with on 10/25 .   There was a little bit (maybe 4 pellets in the entire balance room even before I cleaned up) of calcium chloride near the balances and one calcium chloride pellet on ONE balance pan even before I wiped down the balances.     After I wiped everything down, I took cell phone photos and emailed it.   I would not have taken a photo and emailed the photo if  there was a watery mess in the balance room.   I had not taken a photo of every balance pan however.    However there was absolutly nothing on the balance pans because I wiped down all the balance pans with a paper towel myself.

At the end of my Wednesday lab, one balance did have a little bit of Calcium Chloride spill so I did have my students help me clean that up.    Then I myself wiped down every balance pan with a paper towel.   This time I took photos of every balance pan.  There was absolutely nothing on any of the balance pans.

So you might wonder perhaps if I took on research students I can have my research students help me wipe down every balance pan instead of doing it myself.   Actually when I was a tenure track professor elsewhere and had research students who were being paid by my research grant (not under some other professor but with me as the professor in charge with no other professor), I spent a lot of time actually cleaning up glassware that my own research students had left without cleaning.   Only someone who maybe stole someone else's research to get a doctorate and/or who knows nothing about research would think that doing research with students is easier than teaching students almost anything in a classroom.

Because of Wednesday of the past week being a holiday (no classes held all day, Leadership Day at the Citadel), my Wednesday lab class has not had this class yet so I will post this lab information after my Wednesday class does the lab. posted by Dr, Hahn on 10/26/21 Tuesday at 1:35 pm from her  parent's Columbia, SC home

Expt 6:  Water Lab

Here is the link to the video of the prelab lecture https://1drv.ms/v/s!AtMCcaDAH2NEjQao65GnF1Fb0ehy  (Wednesday 3 pm section).   I shortened it to get rid of the class doing the lab.   I did the explanation of calculations while the class was waiting 20 minutes for their AgCl precipitate to dry in the oven.   The video goes directly to the explanation of the calculations.

Here is the link to the Water's Lab lab report form.   My Monday section lab report form did not have enough space for the students to write in the form itself.    So Monday section can use this lab report form.   Also my Monday section's AgNO3 was not concentrated enough. (according to Dr. Kendall - the guy who sets up the labs    He is the guy who comes into our lab class room about 3 to 5 times in each one of my 4 lab section class times to refill  the solutions. Dr Kendall told me about the AgNO3 concentration being too low on Wednesday morning as I was in the copy room zeroxing the lab report forms before my lab class starts.)    That is why my Monday section's numbers are coming out very very small for everything.

I noticed that I kept saying (in the video above) that the textbook author (for this lab) was different from the other labs but instead of saying textbook author I kept saying lab report form author.   I did not write the textbook but I am writing all of the lab report forms for this class (except the Pennies Lab).   I just used the textbook lab report form for the Pennies lab.   For this lab, the only thing the textbook lab form said is:  something like write an explantion of what happened in this lab but the lab had about 5 pages full of the kind of calculations which I condensed onto the 2 pages of my own lab report form.   Useful Info:   i = e/h     k = j = q      m = letter l *atomic weight Cl     letter o = (m/b)*100   r = k * atomic weight of Na      v = (r/b)*100       w = q / (a /1000)

For my class, (I am grading my own lab reports.) you do not need to do both my lab report form and the lab report form that is in the text.   If there is something in the textbook's lab report form that I want you to complete, I tell you what you need to include on my lab report form (something like do questions 2 and 4 from the lab textbook lab report form, on the Water's lab there were no questions in the textbook lab report form).

ClassDataPrecipitates   Here is the class data.   I am missing the Wednesday 1 pm section data for some reason.   I must have put it in my briefcase and left it at my Citadel office.    In any case any of my sections can use any of the data they want to use to answer the questions.   You should say which data set you used (M-1, M-3, W-3) to answer the question however.   Here is the lab report form for the Wednesday section.   I changed it from the Monday section because Monday section had a typo.   Monday section students may use their own lab report form [correcting the typo - first reaction should be Pb(NO3)2    NOT Ca(NO3)2] or may use the Wednesday lab section lab report form that I am posting here.   I will be able to tell that you are using the downloaded lab report form because this (unlike the one I handed out in class) says POSTED*** at the top of the page.

Rocket Lab

Here is the video of the prelab lecture (Wednesday 3 pm section)  for the "Rocket Lab"  https://1drv.ms/v/s!AtMCcaDAH2NEjQIvTFTUa5etB1vU

ClassData  Here are the data for my 4 sections.   You may make conclusions based on the combined all 4 section data or just on your own section data.   In my Wednesday at 3 pm section class everyone snippped their rocket to NO STEM.    I fixed the 2:5 ratio people's rocket (~ 1/2 cm stem) but everyone else had the NO STEM rockets.   None of the NO STEM rockets worked.   I filled the NO STEM rockets myself so I am sure that the gas filling was done correctly.   (My Wednesday 3 pm section also had almost no yeast solution left so the guy who sets up the lab came into lab about  30 minutes before the end of the lab class and refilled the yeast solution.   I think we had enough yeast for those who filled their oxygen into their rockets so I don't think that was the reason for the rockets not launching.)   I am sure that it is the fact that the rockets had NO STEM that resulted in the no launch results.   My guess is that the NO STEM resulted in the oxygen falling out at same time as it was being filled so the rockets had a lot of air and not a lot of the reactive gases in the rocket.   I know the students in my Wednesday section did do the lab and worked hard except for not following the directions and picture on page 48 of the lab textbook.   NOTE:    I even had the little rocket on the little document camera almost my entire prelab lecture with the correct size of STEM.    I am not sure I understand why the entire class decided that the little sample rocket on my document camera was incorrect and they should all snip the rocket all the way to NO STEM.

I have to admit the Canvas prelab picture (pdf not powerpoint) shows a really long stem which does not match the picture in the lab text.   I am guessing the prelab lecture picture is from several earlier editions of this experiment ?   This is my first semester teaching this lab so I don't know who took that picture of the rocket with something like a 5 cm stem.   It may be from a couple of years ago but certainly before the most recent edition of the lab text.

All of the instructors teaching the General Chemistry lab this semester are taking turns making up the Canvas prelab material.   I am supposed to do the prelab material and the prelab quiz for Experiment 8 and Experiment 10.

[I moved my prelab lecture to Byrd 101 because Byrd 207 has banks of very large windows and I was using my personal $100 computer projector to zoom the class for people on quarantine.   Because my computer projector had very low lumens, I was unable to see anything without covering up all the windows (I used garbage bags).    I was asked to remove the garbage bags from the windows (by the guy who sets up the labs) so then my computer projector was not working in Byrd 207 which is why I am now doing the prelab in Byrd 101. ]

Here is a video from youtube that shows you how to do a plot with one x axis and multiple y axis. Microsoft Excel: Plotting Multiple Data Series in Excel - YouTube

(a) for item # (6) on your lab report form for full credit (10%) attach plot, you may just print out the excel spread sheet for your class section    (I have the pdf as well in case you don't have excel.)  Play around with it as you have time to learn how to do the excel plot.    To do your own plot, select the first column (x axis), push down control  (ctrl) key and select the y axis (450, 525 or 600 nm column) do insert scatter plot

right mouse anywhere on the plot and select "select data"
in "legend entries series" - edit to give title OR add  a new line to your plot
give title on first space, in second space - click on second space and the select the x axis column - click on 3rd space (erase anything that is already there) and select a y axis column
(b) for 5% extra credit which can be applied at the end of the semester to one prelab quiz or one lab report form, complete the partially completed excel at the bottom of the excel spreadsheet on the one that has the green and red trendline.   The directions are given on the excel spreadsheet.

https://1drv.ms/v/s!AtMCcaDAH2NEjQFVqLUpE1zBnm-x  (note in the reading of the buret:   there is a "writo" in the numbers.   It should be 7.31 and 0.21 resulting in a volume added of 7.10.   I changed the number a couple of times by adding a portion of the number and then misread my own modification to the number) Here is the link to the video of the lab lecture.    Note that because the guy who sets up the lab said that I was not allowed to use window coverings in the lab room, I am now going to hold the prelab lecture in Byrd 101 for the rest of the semester. (what is the problem with the window covering - my personal small projector that I was using in the lab room is inexpensive and does not have enough lumen to be visible in a room with a lot of light and Byrd 207 is the only lab room with a bank of windows with no blinds)

NOT have a lab book does NOT excuse you from reading the lab book nor does it excuse you from answering the lab questions.    I posted the lab book on canvas for the first few weeks.   It is still there.   I emailed you that the lab book is there.   Not having access to the lab book despite it being posted in canvas, just indicates that you are expecting to be just given a grade.   That is NOT going to happen.   If you expect this to happen, you will be sadly disappointed (with a really bad grade).   I am going to remove the link to the lab book soon because you should buy a lab book soon

Note that I gave all the answers to the questions in the questions on my own version of the lab report form in my prelab lecture.   So if you had paid attention to the prelab lecture, you would already have all the answers.

I was scheduled to teach Summer II at the Citadel but the class was canceled.   I found out a few days ago that the enrollment needs to be at least around 20 students for the school to not lose money running the class during the summer.   I don't know when they canceled my Summer II class at the Citadel.   During Summer I, I taught a class CHT 224 - current topics in industrial chemistry at Aiken Technical College.   The class that I taught is a part of the nuclear fundamentals certification program at the Savannah River Facility.   CHT 224 is a class with security concerns. I found out a week into teaching the class that it would have been a security risk for me to post class contents on this website.   The students are technicians who will go on to work in the nuclear facility at Savannah River.

I still see my name attached to the canceled lab but not the canceled lecture although I was supposed to teach both in Summer II.   I am not teaching any classes in Summer II at the Citadel (lecture or lab).   A student emailed me at the beginning of Summer I if I would be able to independently teach a lab during Summer I after the Intro I Lab was canceled. (My name was never attached to the Intro I lecture and lab for summer I.   They asked me to teach that Intro I lecture and lab about a week before they canceled the class.   I asked to teach Summer II instead).   I told the student that since I live in Columbia, SC with my parents, I would not make enough money to be able to teach a lab teaching one person.    It almost sounded like a research type of interaction because the person somehow thought that I would be teaching just one person a lab without getting paid.   In fact it would cost me money because I would have to drive 2 hours one way (or 4 hours in and back) to teach a one person a lab 2 days a week.   I actually do work for pay.   I am not teaching because I enjoy hanging around on campus.   I can find lots and lots of things to do with my time for no pay that would not involve me driving my car into the ground.

It is kind of odd but before Spring 2021, they kept putting my name on all sorts of classes without telling me.   Maybe they just needed some name to put by a class ?   I would look at the college course schedule and my name would be listed by some other class every week.   Nobody told me that I was teaching that class, my name was just attached to multiple  classes at different times.     Maybe the administration just likes my name ?   Maybe students like to sign up for a class with a name attached but not for some class taught by "someone" ?  I am in general a very popular teacher.   I think I am a popular teacher because students know that I am a good person with integrity and that I will just do my best to teach them.   I never try to exploit my students and my students know that.   A lot of professors think students (& people) are too stupid to know when someone is trying to exploit them but people are actually a lot smarter than you may think.

I am not just a popular teacher, I am an excellent teacher.   I also managed to get almost full retention of students [retention meaning:   almost no unsuccessful completion of the class due to either low grades (D or F) or dropping class before the end of the semseter ] with comparable student scores on a common end of semester assessment test to other sections.    Other sections (of a multiple sections of a General Chemistry I Lecture for major students at Presbyterian College) had drops of around 25 to 30% with about the same end of semester assessment scores.

Test average (after lowest Test grade replaced by final exam grade) = 91.7%
Final Exam average = 90.5%
Final overall average = 90.4%

I did submit my grades on time but then I got very busy starting to teach a summer class at Aiken Technical College.  I got a few recent emails requesting final grades so I am sending everyone detailed grades for every single thing which you earned grades (as promised at the end of class - just a little late).

I actually thought that I could keep the zoom links working by re-putting it in manually into my zoom file because that is what one of the zoom adminstrators told me but they just auto disappeared without me knowing about it.)

Test 3 covers Chapter 16 (2nd half), all of Chapter 18, all of Chapter 17 and all of Chapter 19.   (HW 16.4 to HW 19.3)
You will be able to use the homework during the test because this is a non science majors class and there is a lot of unfamiliar terms that otherwise would have to be memorized.

3/24/21 Wednesday Lecture class (posted by Dr. Hahn on 3/24/21 Wednesday at 12 noon from her Citadel office)    There was a class on Monday but I was unable to hold a zoom class because the Citadel website (lg.citadel.edu) was out.    I found out after the fact that there is an alternate way to get into the zoom but I did not know at the time so I did not record the class.   However I did not make that much progress because I had a lot of homework in class that I had left off at the last class so I just posted the powerpoint without posting the zoom class.   Since there was no zoom class and no zoom class recording, I would have had to record it at home so I didn't do the re do of the class by recording it at home.   I always takes me longer to record at home, I am not sure why.

3/17/21 Wednesday Lecture class (posted by Dr. Hahn on 3/18/21 at 7:50 am from her parent's Columbia, SC home)  This recording worked although the recording is choppy because my laptop is slow.   I was going to use the ipad / desktop because of the sound only desktop recording of the last zoom recording but I forgot to bring the ipad (left ipad in Columbia).   (My brand new laptop got slow after I downloaded a bunch of zoom recordings before I uploaded the zoom recordings to the cloud early in the semester.)

I had to relog in because the system would not let me log into the Citadel zoom and somehow when I recorded it the share desktop did not work.    So this is the audio recording.
I will also post the powerpoint so hopefully that works (&  everyone was either in class or on zoom during the live class so I will probably not re-record the class lecture).

Test 2:   Starts on Polymer's Chapter (Chapter 10)(starts with & includes rubber and elastomers)
Includes all of  Household Chemicals Chapter (Chapter 20)
Biochemistry Chapter (Chapter 16) until Enymes (ends before enzyme induced fit)

There was some problem with recording the zoom class using the computer in the room with the ipad (what I used in almost all prior recordings).   It only recorded the video without the sound. so I have not posted the 3/8 Monday class.  (entire class in pantomine)  3/10 was the test date so I did not record the class during the test although I did have zoom live.   I then did not have a 3/12 Friday class because that was the Citadel's holiday (mini - Spring Break - 3 day weekend).   Because I could not figure out the issue with the desktop in the room & because the desktop system is so complicated because there are multiple cameras and multiple sound components in the room, I started to use my laptop without the ipad.

no zoom recording for 3/3/21 Wednesday because forgot to record (I manually turn on record in zoom.   I was told that there was a huge issue with divulging student personal information about students when positing zoom recordings online.   So I was trying to start recordings after any personally identifiably information is already discussed.   However it seems that when a student asks a question in person, the student's name is not identified with the question. So I will just turn on recording as soon as the class starts in the future.

2/26/21 Friday (posted by Dr. Hahn on 2/27/21 at 6:35 am from her parent's Columbia, SC home)   The reason why there is no Wednesday 3/24 recording is because I had a car accident on my way to class so I got to class about 5 minutes after 9 am.  (I waited for almost an hour on the highway for the police to come to take a report of the accident.) I handed out all our graded HW in class and Test 1 and then we did not have a lot of time left because we had to take Quiz 3 in the last 15 minutes of class so I did not record or post the class.

Intro II Lab Spring 2021

Here are the final stats for my 3 sections of Intro II Lab in the Spring 2021 semester.

lab quiz average (after the lowest one quiz grade was dropped) = 87.2%
lab report average (after the lowest one lab report grade was dropped) = 91.8%
overall final lab grade average = 90.7%

I got really busy after I submitted your final grades with starting to teach at Aiken Tech their summer class.   A few of you have been asking me for what their final grades ended up being so I am emailing everyone in class their individual grades (every single point earned for every piece of work submitted).

Sugar Test Tube Pictures   Here is the data from two of your class room colleagues.    Note that sucrose unhydrolyzed looks slightly like a reducing sugar in one but not the other.   Since you are boiling the solution with a basic water solution, it is possible that the sucrose DID somewhat hydrolize (because it is a base catalyzed addition of water reaction in the Benedict

Test 3  & Test 3 Work Hahn    opens up at 5 pm today 3/19/21 until 3/21 Sunday at midnight     Test 3 can be taken for 90 minutes     Test 3 Work Hahn can be taken for 60 minutes.   You would want to open up Test 3 Work after completing Test 3.   Please note the the recent modification to your Test 1 and Test 2 grades were from the Test 1 Work and Test 2 Work.   I gave NO extra credit points for anyone from looking at their work because only one person requested that I look at their work.   The added points were from completing the 2 word problems on Test 1 & 2 Work.   I also always give partial credit on the word problems (on Test 1 & Test 2 Work) so even if you came up with the final incorrect answer, if you showed reasonable work, you would have earned some partial credit.   UPSHOT:   DO NOT BLOW OFF THE TEST WORK & SHOW WORK ON THE WORD PROBLEMS ON TEST WORK.    IT LITERALLY COULD BE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN F AND A C.

combustion does not always give carbon dioxide and water.   If you burn the element sulfur, you get SO2 for example.   You only get CO2 and H2O if you burn a hydrocarbon (only has C and H in molecule.)

There is a typo in the Empirical Formula Lab (Combustion Analysis  of duration 8:41).
Number of moles from 0.561 grams of CO2 is 0.0127 moles NOT 0.127 moles.  {0.561g * (1 mol CO2 /44.01 g CO2) = 0.0127 NOT 0.127}

To compensate for that, I am also positing a pdf of the powerpoint and the excel spreadsheet.   You can download the spreadsheet and then just input your data into my columns and the plot should convert over to your plot (as long as you do this on a computer which has the excel program.  OR you can just do your own excel plot.  (a) select your A and l columns  (b) insert chart (scatter x,y) (c) double click the nm axis to adjust nm range (c) chart design - add chart elements (1) axis title (2) trend line (3) trendline options  (d) print out chart to turn in with lab report form

Midterm Grades:

Please note the following colume match to your part of the excel spreadsheet.

QI Qsaf lab 1 QII L 2 QIII L 3 Q4 L4 Q5 L5 Q5B L5B quiz lab MID        letter grade
9/3 8/27 8/27 9/10 9/3 9/17 9/10 9/24 9/17 10/1 9/24 10/8 10/1 ave ave total
sigFig safety SigFig Avo Avo Poly Poly Form Form Cu Cu CuB Cu B

I did not include the safety quiz in your grade because some of you did not take it and can still take it.   Also that quiz had a maximun of 20 (not 25 as is true for the rest of the quizzes).    If you have an excuse for anything listed as zero, please email it to me.    Quarantine excuses are listed as Q.    Some excuse other than quarantine is listed as EX.    If you told me you have an excuse but provided no proof, that missed assignment was counted as unexcused in most cases.

Midterm grades are due on 10/15 when our class meets next so I will submit midterm grades before our class meets.   For your final grade, you do get to drop one lowest quiz grade and one lowest lab grade.   For the midterm, I did not do the drop as a warning.

I am not posting the class of 10/1/20 Thursday (Lab 5 cont:   Part 2 of Chemistry of Copper Lab) because it was mostly just experimental information prior to doing the lab.  Also I had technical difficulties because someone left the SWIVL unplugged (when I came upon it in the morning) so it ran out of power so I had to work with it plugged into the wall which messed up my setting up all the connections.    There was not much prelab on 10/1/20 so I am not recording it to post here.   posted by Dr. Hahn from her parent's Columbia, SC home on 10/3/20 Saturday at 8:05 am.

Here is the zoom recording of 11/12/20 Thursday (Lab 12:   Calorimetry) posted by Dr. Hahn on 11/13/20 Friday at 3:50 pm from her parent's Columbia, SC home
https://citadelonline.zoom.us/rec/share/IokQi0FR8Q7sMYexr4CEmSmcSbVOd2GRKPiwFHbWBOj3ASncfmivHyVulYVXJaGM.1WGqNSBv70aAJdCw?startTime=1605204730000      Annoncement is that the FINAL DEADLINE for ALL late lab reports is  11/23 Monday.  By this deadline (a) you need to turn in complete late lab reports (for 10% off grade)   (b) turn in documentation of excuse  (will average and plug in a grade)   (c) earn a zero on all late lab reports NOT turned into Dr. Hahn   Please note:   my syllabus actually states that you will earn ZERO points after one business week late.   There will be NO FURTHER LENIENCY.     The last day for lab class meeting is 11/19/20 Thursday.   Because I accidentally emailed the wrong data to the class and the class voted to ask for it, we will have our last 2 lab quizzes (titration and calorimetry) on 11/19/20.   You will also turn in the reports for titration and calorimetry on 11/19/20.   We will also do lab check out.    After 11/19/20, the class has ended and we will not meet.   If you need to turn in anything late after 11/19/20, you will have to email it to my email address.

Here is the zoom recordings of 10/29/20 Thursday.  (Lab 10:   Household Chemicals and pH)

The SWIVL robot had the power cord slightly disconnected so that the microphone was out of batteries when I started class.    So I put the microphone to recharge  into the SWIVL and had no sound for the first part of the lab before the start of the quiz.    Recording missed the review for the quiz and answering questions about the lab.    posted by Dr. Hahn on 11/2/20 at 7:23 am from her parent's Columbia, SC home    Since you were unable to look at the bottles for the ingredients list:    Part 2:   club soda - carbonic acid, gatorade - citric acid, lemon juice - citric acid, mouth wash - ethanol, selzer water - carbonic acid, white vinegar - acetic acid, windex cleaner - ammonia   (you can google for instance "shampoo ingredients" and even that lists citric acid as one of the ingredients) obviously water has no ingredients so just write "none" for the rest of the household items in Part 2 chart (Part 2 actually is written Part 3 - typo)

NOTE:    the reason why our carbonic acid was not more acidic is probably because the pH depends on the amount of carbon dioxide dissolved in the water to make carbonic acid.    If there is not enough carbon dioxide dissolved in the water (because the soft drinks are flat), then the soft drinks would have pH 7 as we saw in the lab.   Also the ammonia in the windex is also a gas.    If the windex sits around too long, if lots of ammonia gas escapes into the air, the pH would be almost neutral as we saw in the lab.

Here is the zoom recording of 10/22/20 Thursday class.  (Lab 9:  Conductivity of Household Chemicals) posted by Dr. Hahn on 10/25/20 Sunday at 7:30 am from her parent's Columbia, SC home

I did have some errors in the assignment of metal, metalloid and nonmetal.    The ionic compound information was all correct.
metalloids are (B, Si, Ge, As, Sb and Te).   Metals are all elements to the left of the metalloids.   Non metals are all elements to the right of the metalloids.   Errors:  Sn (tin) is metal NOT metalloid.   Aluminum foil (Al) is metal NOT metalloid.

Here is the zoom recording for 10/15/20 Thursday class.  posted by Dr. Hahn on 10/17/20 Saturday at 9:30 am from her parent's Columbia, SC home   Note  L8 is your experimental measurment for final Volume (volume at cold water temperature of air).   L9 (predicted) eq 9 is your Charles' Law calculation of the final Volume (volme at cold water temperature of air).   L10 is a measure of your percent error.   Good result  would be a lower number for your percent error.   Data for those of you without partners who were in lab is coming soon by email.

Midterm Grades:

Please note the following colume match for your part of the excel spreadsheet.

Q 1 Qsaf lab 1 Q2 L 2 Q 3 L3 Q4 L4 Q 5 L 5 Q 6 L 6
8/27 8/27 8/27 9/10 9/3 9/17 9/10 9/24 9/17 10/1 9/24 10/8 10/1 ave ave ave
num Qsaf numbers Qual Q qual AtomQ atom Spec Q spect NamQ names QsolK KClO3 quiz lab total letter

If you told me you have an excuse but provided no proof that missed assignment was counted as unexcused in most cases.

Midterm grades are due on 10/15 when our class meets next so I will submit midterm grades before our class meets.   For your final grade, you do get to drop one lowest quiz grade and one lowest lab grade.   For the midterm, I did not do the drop as a warning.
