Here is the top portion of the excel spreadsheet.      I emailed everyone in class their own sliver of the excel spreadsheet.   Following my syllabus, I replaced your 2 lowest quiz grades by the HW grade.   If you missed a quiz without an excuse, I replaced the zero that you earned by the HW average.   If you took all your quizzes, it would be the lowest 2 quiz grades.    Qave = average of quiz grades, Tave = average of tests GRD Exam Final is the final exam grade   out/20 HW is HW grade out of 20 pts (used to replace quiz grades with a max of 20), ave HW = HW out of max of 100%,

 final grade = final percentage grade {(Qave*0.80+HWave*0.20)}(0.10) + (Tave*0.65)+(GRD Exam Final * 0.25)

I used the exact grading scale from the front page of the departmental common syllabus part of my syllabus.    I did round up using normal round up rules.

MIDTERM GRADES:    For midterm grades (due at 9 am 2/28/20 Friday), I used 10% (quiz and homework) and 90% (tests).    For the 10% (quiz and homework grade), I used 80% quiz grades and 20% homework grades.   At the end of the semester, I will replace your lowest 2 quiz grades by the homework average but I did not do that for the midterm because you don't have all your quizzes and it would have taken me a lot of time to do that (& almost everyone had S so it would not have made much difference anyway for almost everyone)  I will have the averages for you to look at (by pin # during class) probably Wednesday.   I do have some people making up Quiz 5 so Quiz 5 will not be returned until Wednesday (3/4)  posted by Dr. Hahn on 2/27/20 at 5:20 pm from her Clinton apartment.    Also I am sure that I will NOT be teaching Organic in the summer.   I asked to teach General Chemistry Lecture and Lab during summer but it looks like I am not teaching anything for summer school.   I will also NOT be doing any research of any kind with anyone at PC during the summer.

Chapter13-2/26/20 Wednesday      Note:  end of quiz 4 and end of quiz 5 (most of chapter 13 to be covered on quiz5)    Because of "assessment day" (no class) the C section lost the class on 2/25/20 Tuesday so the C section is almost an entire class behind the A section.   Both section's quiz will end at the same point.    posted by Dr. Hahn on Wednesday 2/26 at 10:22 am from her PC office Richardson 316

Chapter12-1/31/20   Here are powerpoints for material covered on 1/31/20 Friday.

Chapter11-1/31/20 End of Chapter Start Test 2

Chapter11 - 1/24/20 end of Test 1:

For Test 1 - make sure to study Quiz 1 and Quiz 2 and all of the Homework in Class.    Also anything posted on my version of the powerpoints is fair game for the test.   So that would be all of Chapter 9 and Chapter 11 up to where it says Test 1 ends here in powerpoint slide.   I am grading Quiz 2.   I have posted the hardcopy of the answer key outside my office now.    I should be able to return Quiz 2 on Monday (A section) or Tueday (C section).   Unlike other professors in which the last day before the Test is optional, I will often go over material that you should be sure to study for the Test on the last day before the test.   After I return the quiz, you will have an opportunity to ask questions about anything that you think might be on Test 1.   I will make sure that everyone understands everything and then we will have Test 1 on Wednesday.   Good luck studying for Test 1.    posted by Dr. Hahn on 1/24/20 Friday at 11 am from her PC office

Chapter11-1-22-20   posted by Dr. Hahn on 1/22/20 from her PC office  -  note end of Quiz 2 + material probably on Test 1.    Test 1 will contain no material after the end of the A section class.   A section is now an entire lecture class behnind C section because of the MLK holiday.  So what is posted for the end of class 1/22/20 for the C section will be probably where Test 1 ends.

ReviewIntermolecularForces   Here are relevant portions of the Powerpoint from General Chemistry I for intermolecular forces.    This would be useful for answering questions about high Intermolecular Force for surface tension/viscosity/MP/BP etc.   (Intermolecular Forces is not going to be the major part of Test 1)

Quiz6-AnswerKey (combined average both sections 84.4% unadjusted) posted by Dr. Hahn on 3/9/20 Monday (Spring Break) at 8:50 am from her parent's Columbia, SC home -

Please note:   Quizzes helps the class study for the Test.   I scheduled 2 quizzes before every Test this semester.   One of the quizzes is about a week and a half before the Test and one of the quizzes is one class day before the Test.    ex:   Quiz 6 was on 3/6 Friday.   Then we have a week of Spring Break (no classes) followed by Test 3 on 3/18 Wednesday.   So for all quizzes schedule one class day before the test, I cannot give make up quizzes after the day of the quiz.   (For Quiz 6, I gave one make up quiz which ended at 3 pm on 3/6 Friday at the end of my General Chemistry II Lab class.)   This is so that everyone in class can study for the Test by looking at the answer key to the quizzes before the test.   I DO NOT post the answer key and THEN give a make up Quiz.   I cannot make up a makeup quiz different enough from the regular quiz that I can fairly give a make up quiz after I post the answer key to the other quizzes.   You can tell by looking at the posted "Make Up Quiz" answer keys.   The "Make Up Quiz" is similar to the regular quiz.   I also prefer to not give a make up quiz a week after I give the quiz to the rest of the class for the other quiz (Quiz 5).    If I waited a week (to allow for make up quizzes)  that would mean that the entire class would have to cram study both quizzes immediatly before the Test.   I usually do allow up to a week after giving a Test before I post the Test to allow for make up Tests.  Since there are usually no exams covering the same material after a test, the class does not need the answer key to the test to study for the next quiz or Test.   [However for Test 4 which is followed by the Final Exam, I cannot give the make up quiz after the day of Test 4 because the last day of classes (when I can go over Test 4) is the next class period.]  Those are my rules for my class.   I DO NOT (under the table) do something else different for certain people.   Everyone is covered by the same rule and no one gets special priviledges for any reason because I am fair to everyone.

If you miss the quiz and the makeup quiz do you get an F ?  No, of course not.

If you miss the quiz with a documented excuse, I will average in and plug in a grade.

example:   missed quiz 6 / your own average all quizzes = class average quiz 6 / class average all quizzes

I do this instead of using just your own average because the class average on quizzes fluctuates depending on the difficulty of the quiz.   If you miss the high average quiz and I just use your own average, then you would have a lower calculated average.

If you miss 2 of 8 total quizzes for any reason (I just did not feel like taking the quiz that day.), then I will replace those quiz grade by the homework in class grade average.   The homework grade average for the class is around 98%.    If you take all quizzes, then I will replace your lowest 2 quiz grades by the homework grade.   (Note that 2 of 8 total quizzes is 25% of your quizzes.    The Chemistry Department absence policy actually states that 25% non attendance will result in being dropped from the class.   I am not dropping people from class but missing more than 2 quizzes with no reason at all should result in some consequences.)

Dr. Hahn's Versions of Powerpoints

Chapter10-Powerpoint-12-6-19Friday Because a number of you were missing on 12/6 Friday and I finished covering up Chapter 10 on Friday, I went ahead and posted the Homework for those of you who were not in class.  I understand that it is exam time for other classes as well as my own classes and I don't want you to lose points on questions covered Friday.   I did cram in the remaining parts of Chapter 10.   I would normally have spent more time covering it.   The common departmental Final Exam has 15% of points on Chapter 10.    posted by Dr. Hahn on 12/7/19 Saturday at 7:45 am from her parent's Columbia, SC home

Chapter10Powerpoint12-2-19Monday posted by Dr. Hahn on 12/2/19 Monday at 2:40 pm from her PC office, Richardson 316

Chapter4(10/12/19)  Thanks to the class for the suggestions on Friday.   Here is the most recent powerpoint from Friday (ending with Friday lecture but including the rest of the chapter.  I will also probably stop including the material the day of the quiz as extra credit. This will mean no extra credit on the quiz.  Unlike Dr. Gearheart (according to what he said -  I thought it was unlikely that he would be printing out the powerpoints for his class so I asked and that is what he said he did.), I will not be printing out copies of the powerpoint and selling them to the class at cost. I would probably break the copy machine if I did do this on the science copier.    posted by Dr. Hahn on 10/12/19 Saturday at 11:12 am from her parent's Columbia, SC home
Chapter4 (up to material to be covered on Test 2 - updated from last Chapter 4 posting - posted by Dr. Hahn on 10/5/19 Saturday at 8:35 am from her  parent's Irmo, SC home in the Coldstream subdivision)    Good luck studying for Test 2.

****************************************************Quiz & Test Keys (& averages)

Here are Lecture Quizzes and Tests Answer Keys.

Final Grade -  average combined 3 sections of lecture = 85%     The letter grade was derived from the letter scheme on page 1 heading 3 (Grading System) from your syllabus from the beginning of the semester.    I do not fudge the final grades.   You get exactly what you earned.

To calculate Final Grade = [{(HWave* 0.2) + (Qave* 0.8)}*0.1] + (Examave * 0.65) + (Final Exam *0.25)

For the Quiz average you also need to replace your lowest quiz grade by your HW (homework) average. Your Excel Spreadsheet portion which I handed out to you on 12/9/19 had all the averages (unless you had an excused absence for a quiz or exam) for HW, Quiz and Exam.  If you had an excused absence quiz or exam you can use the formula    (note:   all the quiz and test averages are posted outside my office door in Richardson 316)

example:     missing quiz 2 / your own average on quiz = class average on quiz 2 / quiz average on all quizzes

That Quiz average (on the excel spreadsheet piece handed out on 12/9)  also did not have the replacement of your lowest quiz grade by HW average.    If you are not sure which number is which, the title of the excel spread sheet is posted outside my office in Richardson 316.   Line up your piece to the title for your own section.

If you still have questions, would like to see your final exam graded scantron (or even your own marked up final exam or even your own scratch paper), I kept everything so you can email me and request that I show you exactly where your final exam grade or final grade came from.     The Final Exam Raw Score was adjusted.

Have a good Christmas and New Year and see you in Spring 2020.

Test 4-AnswerKey Here is the answer key to Test 4.   (average combined 3 sections of lecture = 86%) posted by Dr. Hahn on 12/8/19 at 7:20 am from her parent's Columbia, SC home

Quiz4-AnswerKey-&-BlankForm  (average combined 3 sections of lecture  no extra credit = 77%)
Here is the answer key to Quiz 4.   I am also posting the blank form so that you can study for Test 4 by using the quiz as a worksheet.   posted by Dr. Hahn on 11/28/19 Thursday (Thanksgiving Day) at 8:50 am from her parent's Columbia, SC home

Test 3 Answer Key   (average combined 3 sections of lecture = 86 %)
Here is the answer key to Test 3.   posted by Dr. Hahn on 11/12/19 at 10:30 pm from her Clinton apartment (Highland Parks)

Quiz3-BlankFormAllForms
Here is the blank form of Quiz 3 so that you can use it to study by.    A student asked me to post the blank form.   I did not scan it in because that is time consuming.    So if there are any hand drawn parts to the quiz, that is not on the quiz because it is just the acrobat version of my word document.   posted by Dr. Hahn on 11/5/19 at 8:30 from her PC office Richardson 316

Quiz3 Answer Key  (average combined 3 sections of lecture  = 81%, no extra credit because no material covered the day of the quiz included on quiz because of objections to having extra credit on material covered the day of the quiz)
Here is the answer key to Quiz 3.  posted by Dr. Hahn 11/2/19 Sunday at 8:30 from her parent's Columbia, SC home

Test 2 Answer Key (average combined 3 sections of lecture 82.5%)   Here is the answer key to Test 2.   posted by Dr. Hahn 10/20/19 Sunday at 8:33 am from her parent's Columbia, SC home

QuizII (average = 88.3 % extra credit on material covered the day of the quiz) Here is the answer key to Quiz II.    I have your quizzes graded and will return it on Monday.   You can view the key and check that I graded correctly on Monday.   I also have the blank form of the quiz scanned in after the key.   Make sure that you can do (& can understand) how to answer the questions on the quiz (all forms).   I divided up the material amongst the 5 versions of quizzes because there was too much material for all versions to have all important material.   If I had put all material on one quiz, it would have taken you an hour or two to complete the quiz.   To study for Test 2, please make sure that you can do all versions of the quiz.  The material on the test will not be identical to the quiz and the question may be asked in a differnt format (like Short Answer on the quiz, multiple choice on the Test, etc.)   See you Monday and I hope you all study and do really well on Test 2.   posted by Dr. Hahn on 10/6 Sunday at 8:26 am from her parents house in Columbia, SC
Test I (average = 83.4 % - raw average - not curved or adjusted)
Quiz I  (average = 92 %, extra credit on material covered the day of the quiz)

LectureChapterOne-McMurry  Here is the powerpoint for Chapter One.   I will post the answer key to the HW (in class) later.

I will normally NOT post the answer key to the HW.   I am this time because of people who joined the class late.    Dr. Hahn   9/2/19 Monday from her PC office (Richardson 316)

Here is LectureChapterTwoMcMurry (newer version is below).   I thought I had posted it but when I checked today it was not there.   It would have been a good idea to ask me about it rather than assuming that I had not posted it for some reason.   I said I was going to post it on Wednesday afternoon.   posted by Dr.  Hahn on 9/12/19 Thursday at 2:22 pm from her PC office.

LectureChapterTwoMcMurry  (Chapter 2 after 9/13 lecture).   Please note that The D section is a little behind the  F & G sections.   I posted the last thing covered during G section 9/13 Lecture.   Our Test One  will cover everything in chapter one and chapter two which I will be covering (ending in naming covalent compounds).   (I'll pick up kinetic energy and nuclear chemistry at a later time.)

LectureChapterTwoMcMurry(after 9/16 Monday Lecture) is posted here.    posted by Dr. Hahn from her PC office Richardson 316 on 9/16/19 at 1:34 pm

I am working on grading Quiz I and will return that on Monday.   I will post the answer key to Quiz I  soon.   Please  come to class monday with a cell phone or laptop so that you can look at the posted answer key when I return the graded quiz.   You want to make sure you understand the quiz answers.   I also want you to check my grading for any errors.    posted by Dr. Hahn on 9/14/19 at 8:38 am from her parent's Columbia, SC home

Here is Quiz-I-AnswerKey.   I am finished with grading the quiz and will return the quiz on Monday.   Also be prepared to ask any questions that you may have about Exam I.   Exam I will cover all of Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 covered in my sections.  We started naming ionic compounds in section D, finished naming ionic compounds in section F and  finished naming covalent compounds in section G.   So Exam I will cover naming Covalent Compounds.   There is a small section about naming covalent compounds which I will cover for the D and F section on Monday.   Naming covalent compounds is almost the same as naming ionic compounds except for the number prefixes.   I already posted naming covalent compounds in the powerpoint above after the 9/13 lecture.   See you Monday and I hope everyone does as well on Exam I as they did on Quiz I.   Good Job.      posted by Dr. Hahn on Sunday 9/15/19 at 6:40 pm from her Clinton, SC apartment.
